Hula Kahiko - traditional Hawaiian dance
Kakuhihewa - Hula ŽUliŽuli
In the category traditional dances MaiŽana will represent the story of Kakuhihewa. Kakuhihewa is probably the best-remembered of the ancient chiefs, for it was during his reign
that OŽahu prospered and a general contentment settled over the land. Kakuhihewa served to confirm the spiritual power of his birth-place, Kukaniloko. Being born at this most sacred
of birthing sites had conferred on him the most auspicious kind of blessings, and he rose to greatness.
In this Hula the dancers will use a ŽUliŽuli. The supporting extra rythm and the colourful feathers of this instrument, reflect the
joy and happiness this great chief brought upon HawaiŽi.

Ka Nohona Pili Kai
Ka Nohona Pili Kai is a song written by one of HawaiŽiŽs best-known musicians of today, KealiŽi Reichel. This is a song about memories from KealiŽiŽs youth and tells about his grandmothers
beach home on the windward side of Maui, recalling the sights and sounds of growing up in PaŽia.
Memories of a youth that give a sense of peace and love. |
