Refreshed with the newest dances, that were taught
to the dancers earlier this year by Hawaiian Kumu Hula Al Makahinu
Barcarse, Mai'ana brought two shows on the stages of the Pasar
Malam Besar in The Hague on Tuesday 30th May 2006.
The show extravaganza in the Bintang theatre
started off with traditional dances, Hula Kahiko, which are accompanied
by the 'Ipu heke' (hollowed out gourd) and chanting. In Hula Kahiko
the dancers perform the stories based on ancient legends. The strict
and tight handmotions and the emotions on the face are all part
of the story telling about best-remembered chiefs, nature and gods
of Hawai'i.
After the Hula Kahiko the show was continued with more modern
Hawaiian dances, the Hula Auana, which are very cheerful and the
costuming is more colourful. Combined with the exciting dances
of Tahiti, the ote'a and aparima the show gave a complete view
of dances of the Polynesian Islands.
In between the two shows Kumu hula Conchita Joenoes gave, together with some of her dancers,
a workshop Hawaiian Hula for interested visitors of the Pasar Malam Besar.
In the evening the Tong Tong stage was the location for a 30 minute show with
highlights of Hawaiian and Tahitian dances. Both shows were accompanied by the live-band Da Kine. |
